Sphere debuts immersive Wizard of Oz show August 28
Las Vegas is adding another original production to its entertainment roster this summer as Sphere unveils The Wizard of Oz Experience, a permanent attraction that fuses cinema with immersive technologies. Launching August 28, the 50-minute show presents MGM's 1939 musical classic on the world's highest-resolution screen, upgraded with real-time effects, multichannel sound, and responsive seating.
This marks the Sphere's first narrative film production designed as a standalone repeat attraction, diverging from its initial programming of nature documentaries and concert residencies. The experience is positioned as a family-accessible draw during off-peak hours and is expected to boost midweek traffic at the $2.3 billion venue.
A new kind of spectacle
Unlike traditional screenings, The Wizard of Oz Experience uses Sphere's 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen and 4D seat effects to engage all senses. Audiences will feel haptic pulses as the tornado hits Kansas, smell fresh poppies as Dorothy approaches the Emerald City, and watch Toto bound across the screen in full surround. The show does not replace the film's original audio or structure, but builds layered interactivity around it, including ambient lighting and overhead projections.
The adaptation preserves Judy Garland's vocals and core scenes while condensing the run time to under an hour. This allows for higher show frequency and makes it accessible to families with children. Sphere Entertainment reports that the project was developed in consultation with the estate of L. Frank Baum and Warner Bros., which owns the Oz film rights.
Schedule and pricing
The Wizard of Oz Experience will run daily with multiple start times between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Unlike concert residencies, tickets are not dynamically priced. Base admission begins at $49, with premium seating zones topping out at $79. Children under 6 are admitted free with a ticketed adult. Tickets went on sale August 1 via the Sphere's official website and selected partners.
This show does not conflict with evening residency programming. U2 concludes its run August 10, while Phish performs a four-night stand beginning August 15. A new headline residency is expected to be announced shortly for the fall calendar.
Sphere with the family and tourists
Since opening in fall 2023, the Sphere has primarily focused on adult audiences via high-profile concerts and specialty films. The Wizard of Oz Experience marks a shift toward daytime content that targets a broader demographic, including multigenerational travelers and school-age groups.
The move comes as part of Sphere's revised programming strategy after reports of soft weekday ticket sales. In March 2025, Sphere Entertainment spun off from MSG and signaled a diversification plan that included more licensed entertainment and immersive walk-throughs. Future family-friendly titles are also in development, including a potential tie-in with Warner Bros. Discovery's Looney Tunes properties.
Technology at the forefront
The Sphere remains the only venue in the world with a fully integrated audio-haptic environment at this scale. With over 160,000 speakers embedded in the walls and seats, the space allows for precise directional sound that follows characters as they move across the dome. In The Wizard of Oz Experience, this allows elements like the Cowardly Lion's roar or Glinda's entrance to arrive from multiple axes in sync with visual effects.
The venue's proprietary SM8 seats add physical feedback through vibration and airflow. Fog bursts and wind simulations are used sparingly but effectively to simulate weather shifts and magical effects. Guests are advised that seat effects can be disabled individually, and accessibility options are available.
Designed for repeat visitation
Unlike concerts or one-time films, The Wizard of Oz Experience is structured for repeat visits. Sphere has embedded hidden "easter eggs" within scenes that change depending on showtime and day. There are also limited-edition ticket series and Oz-themed merchandise tied to specific show segments.
Additionally, Sphere is offering package deals with other attractions at The Venetian Las Vegas, including bundling options with Madame Tussauds Las Vegas and Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas.
Location and nearby attractions
Sphere is located at 255 Sands Ave, adjacent to The Venetian Las Vegas and reachable via a dedicated pedestrian bridge from the Strip. Operating hours for the attraction are 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily, including holidays. The site also includes a Sphere Studios exhibit that shows behind-the-scenes footage of the venue's technology development.
Nearby attractions include:
- Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas
- The Palazzo at The Venetian Resort
- Madame Tussauds Las Vegas
- Virtual Reality at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas
Parking is available in the Venetian structure and is free for the first 3 hours with validation from Sphere. Ride-share drop zones are clearly marked, and monorail access is 10 minutes away on foot.
Industry implications
The launch of The Wizard of Oz Experience has drawn attention from both Hollywood studios and other immersive venues nationwide. Analysts expect similar IP-driven, sensory-enhanced productions to follow if ticket sales remain strong. Unlike theme parks or escape rooms, the Sphere model relies on cinema-enhanced storytelling delivered at scale, with fewer labor and reset costs.
As the Las Vegas Strip continues to evolve its daytime offerings, the Sphere's Oz initiative could set the template for how tech-forward venues balance live music, film, and interactivity in a post-pandemic entertainment environment.
Bookings and availability
Tickets for The Wizard of Oz Experience are currently available through the Sphere's ticket portal and major resale platforms. Group reservations for parties of 10 or more may receive discounted rates, and annual passes with tiered access are under consideration.
Advance booking is recommended through September due to anticipated demand, especially during Labor Day weekend and school breaks. Sphere staff report that early sales are outpacing prior short-run shows and are monitoring capacity to expand hours if needed.
